The Malaysian Ministry of Health strengthens anti-smoking enforcement.

According to The Star on October 22, the Deputy Minister of the Malaysian Ministry of Health, Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli, said that inspections will be strengthened in places where complaints about smoking in non-smoking places are frequently received.

Norhayati revealed that from October 1 to 21, 352 places were inspected in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya in accordance with the Public Health Smoking Products Control Act 2024 (Act No. 852). Under Section 47 of the Act, a total of 33 tickets were issued, with a cumulative fine of RM8,250 (US$1,900). Among them, 18 tickets involved restaurants, 7 were issued to shopping malls, and 8 were for public parking areas.

The deputy minister further pointed out that the new anti-smoking signs have added e-cigarette logos and QR codes for the public to scan for more health consultation services. The number of complaints received determines the “hotspot” locations where enforcement officers will conduct more frequent inspections. She hopes the new signs will provide clearer guidance.

When asked about the reaction of venue owners, she said that all owners have cooperated with the use of the new prohibition signs. They understand the need to comply and support and welcome the enforcement.

At a press conference on October 4, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad announced that from January 1 next year, laundries and office buildings in the government and private sectors will be designated as no-smoking areas.

The implementation of the new bill will be divided into two stages: immediate enforcement and educational enforcement. Immediate enforcement targets the sale of tobacco products in the form of some games that attract children and teenagers to limit their supply, especially to minors. In addition, the bill prohibits the sale of tobacco products in educational institutions, markets, online platforms and vending machines, and immediately prohibits any advertising, promotion and sponsorship activities targeting children and teenagers.
